The 1001 Movies

Most movie lovers will know of the existence of a book titled ‘1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die.’ A couple of years ago I bought the fifth edition of that book when it came out, and I’ve sworn by it, despite the fact that there are some of my favourite films omitted (these, thankfully, are very few). The list is updated every year so, at the moment, there are a total of 1079 films that have been printed throughout various editions of the book. So, the following is a list of these movies, and which ones I have seen. The ones I’ve viewed and have a working memory of are bolded. The rest I haven’t seen. Ones that are italicised are ones I’ve seen, but a long time ago so I have a poor memory of them, or also films I’ve only partially seen.

What’s the point of doing this list, you might ask? Simply so that readers can get more of an idea of who I am and what movies I’ve seen. So, without further ado:

Which movies have you seen? Which do I desperately need to see? Leave a comment below.

  1. It’s funny, coz I was just flicking through my copy yesterday. I finally bought myself a copy last year after getting the book out from the library probably four or five times. Without that book, I probably wouldn’t be so interested in movies, although I remember that once I got past the 1950s, I was kinda uninterested in the book because I was so infatuated with classic Hollywood. I still swear by the book…it’s awesome!

I haven’t really seen that many movies on the list, though. I really should, but it’s so hard when you’re local DVD store is the worst DVD store on the planet (yes, I realise I work there, but it seriously does suck). But I’m working my way through them.

Any that you definitely should see? Well, it kinda annoys me when people say you *have* to see something. But some of my favourite ones that you haven’t seen are Gone with the Wind, The Lady Eve, A Streetcar Named Desire, His Girl Friday, The Awful Truth, Now Voyager, Jezebel, The Philadelphia Story, Meet Me in St Louis, Notorious, All About Eve, High Noon, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge, La Vie En Rose and Atonement. Wow, there’s more than I thought!

    • Wow, those recommendations… They share a certain bias, I think, eh Stevee? Huh? Lol. I will not begrudge you for loving classics more than others. I too love a good classic but nowhere near as much as a 60s foreign film or a 90s indie movie, my two favourite genres.

I can’t really start recommending movies because I’d be unable to stop but I will name five just for the sake of it that are on this list:

1: The Piano Teacher (seriously, for all BLACK SWAN fans, this is a MUST).

2: The Three Colours trilogy (the three most beautiful movies ever made).

3: Dekalog (the closest thing to the best movie ever made).

4: The White Ribbon (a period drama-style thriller that raises more questions than it answers).

5: Fanny and Alexander (the most visually beautiful film I have ever seen).

There. Those should keep you busy. Three films, one trilogy and one ten part miniseries you should be proud to add to your queue.

  2. This is actually a pretty good list.

Glad to see that West Side Story and Akira have been included, here.

Being the nerd that I am, I think that they have gotten the date wrong on Orpheus (1949, think it came out in 1950.)

Anyway, there are definitely a lot of these films I haven’t seen that we have in my house, and some that I haven’t heard of on here that I definitely want to check out.

Good luck with watching all those films!

    • I wouldn’t be able to stand owning a movie and not having seen it, especially if it were on this list. Looking at the list I feel ashamed for all I haven’t seen, but proud for all I have. I am content, but hungry.

  3. We have probably seen about the same amount. I own the same edition you do (ending in 2003 with Kill Bill Vol. 1). You haven’t seen Chungking Express or In the Mood For Love? Well, they’re two I can recommend.

  4. Hi, Tyler and company:

    Excellent list.

Though, I’d add ‘A Face In The Crowd’ from 1957. A great film that reveals the power of mass communication, celebrity and Andy Griffith’s ability to be a first-class heel.

Also surprised to see ‘The Bad And The Beautiful’ missing. A worthy primer about how the old Hollywood system worked.

Surprised to see ‘The Big Chill’ made the list. When John Sayles’ earlier ‘Return Of The Secaucus Seven’ is a much better film. Even though it lacks Kasdan’s superior soundtrack.

Thrilled that ‘The Battle Of Algiers’ made it. Also Frankenheimer’s ‘Seconds’.

  5. I use icheckmovies.com, which also has this list. Although I’m sure there must have been movies I have not checked there I currently have seen 203 of them…. (you check it here http://www.icheckmovies.com/list/1001+movies+you+must+see+before+you+die/nostra/)

    • That list isn’t bad at all, but there are some real shockers you haven’t seen. BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN springs to mind. I sort of envy you, having so many great movies ahead of you.

      • I’m currently working my way through the IMDB top 250, will see which list I will look into after that. There are so many classic movies I still have not seen though, but slowly discovering them is nice indeed, although I must admit there are some which I don’t understand all the hype about (like The African Queen)

    • IMDb Top 250 is good. Some great movies on there, and some stinkers (seriously… don’t even bother with CRASH, if it’s still on there).

      • It’s not on there anymore, although I remember seeing it. Out of the top 250 I’ve currently seen 185 and am trying to reach 200 by the end of the year, which will be no problem if there are no huge changes to the list….

      • 185 is very good. I’m not sure how many I’ve seen. Good luck reaching 200!

  6. Thanks…there are way too many classics which I know I already should have seen but never did. Saw Full Metal Jacket for the first time last week…

  7. Y’know I actually saw Nanook of the North in a film class in college, it was interesting but I probably wouldn’t have seen it otherwise.

I’m gonna follow Stevee and list the films you haven’t seen that are my faves, I’ll just go w/ 5:
    – Gone with the Wind
    – Ben Hur
    – It’s a Wonderful Life
    – Roman Holiday
    – Lord of the Rings

I can’t believe you haven’t seen LOTR considering where you live, ahah. If I were you I probably would’ve taken the LOTR tours several times, he..he..

Thanks for this list, Tyler, there are lots of stuff you have seen that I haven’t either.

    • I feel so guilty having missed out on movies that are constantly being recommended to me. As for LOTR, a nine hour movie about midgets with big feet walking to a mountain just does not interest me. Even if it was made here. But seeing as it’s on this list it looks like I’ll have to see it eventually. 🙂

  8. I just got here through Stevee from Cinematic Paradox, and loved your blog!

Every time I go to the store, I look at those “1001 Movies” books, and always feel so frustrated for not having seen most of films they list! And also because sometimes they recommend some films that I didn’t like, or as more often occurs, they don’t recommend the ones I’d like them to recommend, haha! I haven’t seen most of the films you haven’t either – only the ones from Disney and a couple more, like LORT, Giant, All that Jazz, Pretty Woman, etc. And I guess I’d recommend the disney films. People may laugh, but I think they were really good back then, and so different – Snow White is kind of dark and serious in many ways, and in my opinion, that makes it very interesting.

  9. I also got here through Stevee, wonderful blog as much as I can say now.
I have a very old, swedish editions, it ends with Million Dollar Baby (2001), but I wrote all of the new that were added on a sheet of paper that I put inside. Great idea to list all the films you’ve seen of those, I haven’t seen many of the classics, but the book is a good inspiration and motivation.
Also thanks to the guy who recommended iCheckMovies.com – cool site.

  10. Sorry for commenting all over your blog. Given your affinity for long films, how have you not seen Celine And Julie Go Boating already? I would think that would be right up your alley.

    • Argh, don’t remind me! There’s so many great films I haven’t seen and I feel terrible for it, but I want to! CELINE AND JULIE has been on my list for a while.

  11. I nearly freaked out ‘cos I couldn’t see Rosemary’s Baby on the list. Found it though, phew. Okay, I will think of some good ones not on there, just to be an annoying know it all. Good list though for those not au fait with a general film history, I am somewhat guilty, I must say.

  12. I’m late to your post, but also check out ‘They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They?’. They aggregate every Best Movie list into a single Top 1000 list. An IMDB board then discusses films that were left off and they generate a ‘Doubling the Canon’ list of another 1000 great films. I also recommend Icheckmovies.com to track all of these lists.

  13. Luke Caxford

    Have you not seen LOTR?

  14. It always amazes me when people haven’t seen Star Wars. Its just been referenced by popculture so many times that you most likely know the entire plot. It is however slightly ruined by the fact that you will end up spending most your time going ‘oohhh’ while you suddenly get millions of previously misunderstood Simpsons references…

  15. Wow. I have a copy of the 2011 edition with Black Swan on the cover, and while I’m not a huge fan of the film I was shocked to see Mulholland Drive couldn’t be fit into a list of 1001 films while Independence Day and Avatar could.

  16. I’m also surprised Eyes Wide Shut didn’t make into the 2011 edition. On another note, the French filmmaker Mauric Pialat only has one entry, Loulou. His fimography is certainly worth exploring if you’re unfamiliar with him.

  17. Mulholland Drive and Eyes Wide Shut not making it onto a top 100 list is one thing, but 1001??

  18. I’m sorry but where is INCEPTION?!!

  19. I value the content on your site. Thanks for your time.

  20. You’ll die before seeing all these films. Some choice picks, but “Goldfinger?”
